Introduction
Immunology is a key medical science discipline with immense contribution to healthcare. The discipline is instrumental in the development of vaccines and essential immune based therapies to infectious diseases and other immune mediated disorders. The field of Immunology has had a tremendous growth in the past few decades and therefore needs highly trained professionals to continue extending the field.
Postgraduate training in Immunology is highly recommended for practitioners/scientists in health professions. This programme expects to produce scientist- practitioners engaged in creating, dissemination and applying Immunology knowledge. A Postgraduate with PhD in Immunology degree of Moi University are expected to be a leader in the field of Immunology and a providers of education and training to the next generation of professionals in institutions of higher learning in Kenya and internationally.
The European Union through Intra Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2021-2025, currently supports the PhD in Immunology programme.
Admission Requirements
In order to qualify for admission for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Immunology of Moi University, a candidate must meet the following academic requirements. The Moi University Graduate Studies common regulations and the School of Medicine Graduate Studies Committee (SOMGSC) rules governing admission shall apply.
- An applicant must hold Bachelor’s degree, Master’s Degree in Immunology or equivalent degree recognized by Moi University Senate.
- In addition, applicant will be required to pass written and oral entrance examination administered by the Pathology (Immunology) Department.
- International students shall demonstrate proficiency in English language
Admission Duration
A candidate normally registers as a full-time student for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years Continuance of registration depends on evidence of satisfactory progress.
Course Structure
The PhD in Immunology programme at Moi University is by coursework, examination and thesis extending of a period of at least 3 years.
- First year of study will include most of the required coursework, attendance of seminars, poster sessions, retreats, journal clubs, and interaction with faculty to identify research topic of interest
- Second year of study, the students will be expected to have a IREC approved project proposal and university appointed Supervisors (s) and have joined their specific research group and laboratory ready to implement their respective research project.
- Third (and subsequent) years of study- students should be well on their research implementation, complete data analysis and thesis write-up.
