The department of Mental Health is located at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) out-patient building, Room 196 at the MTRH- Moi University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) Complex.
The department is committed to the provision of high quality training that meets the needs of the providers and consumers of mental health services as well as other stakeholders through innovative quality training, care, and research. Mental Health training is at both the undergraduate (MBChB III, MBChB IV & MBChB VI) and postgraduate levels (M.MED. PSYCH) and employs a problem based learning method with the principle of a bio-psychosocial approach. We also teach Master of Medicine (M.MMED) students from various programs including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Reproductive Health and Child Health and Paediatrics alongside students from the Bachelor of Science in Medical Psychology program, Department of Behavioural Science. Our faculty also empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to handle the ethical and medico-legal issues that are commonly encountered in clinical practice and research through a common postgraduate course in Medical Ethics and Physicianship.
We provide specialist clinical services at the Mental Health Unit (MHU), Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation (ADAR) Unit/ Clinic , General Adult Psychiatry Clinic, Forensic Psychiatry Clinic, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic, as well as at the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) Clinic.
The department of Mental Health coordinates an outreach Community Psychiatry program that involves collaboration with neighbouring health facilities at Mosoriot, Turbo, and Burnt Forest sub-county Hospitals. Our department has also continuously engaged in collaborative research and training with partners in other centres around the world; including our North American consortium partners (Indiana, Duke and Brown among others) and Maastricht University Netherlands.
We endeavour to participate in promoting Mental Health through research, innovative training and evidence based care.
