Master of Medicine on Psychiatry
Introductioon
Psychiatry is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the mind. This involves disorders affecting thoughts, emotions and behaviours of individuals. The study of psychiatry encompasses various fields in the biological sciences, social sciences and clinical medicine. These specifically include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, psychology, sociology and anthropology as well the areas common to all medical disciplines such as the principles of epidemiology and biostatistics, pharmacology and clinical techniques.
Training in psychiatry is also intended for preparation of the student for subspecialty training in areas such as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Psycho trauma, Forensic Psychiatry and community psychiatry among others.
At the end of the program, the graduate is expected to be proficient in a variety of settings including: provision of direct care to patients, managing mental health services, teaching and undertaking research activities. This program is designed to produce a versatile graduate with the ability to function with a high level of competence in clinical, management, training and research settings.
The program is community-oriented in its implementation. The teaching and learning strategies have been deliberately selected to encourage acquisition of an integrated and holistic body of knowledge and skills through self directed active learning methods.
